Fry-IT is the company I work for. We are a software consultancy who focus on web & mobile development and managed hosting. My job is to build web applications and web sites which I do in Zope and Django. The company started almost ten years ago by Zahid, Marcus and Keean who were all researches at Imperial College here in London and I was the first employee. Now I'm a co-owner of the company and I enjoy my job very much. At the time of writing we are 13 full-time people of which about a third work from the office in London.

A project we do at Fry-IT is our online expense management application called SnapExpense which I'm the technical lead on. This is our first, shall we say, invention and although it's been brewing in fully working mode since 2006 we haven't yet started to sell it. The great thing about SnapExpense is that unlike the competition I genuinely believe this is the most user-friendly and most efficient of its kind.

Our philosophy at Fry-IT is a bit unorthodox. Basically, we don't really have any rules, secrets or hierarchy. Everyone is treated as an adult rather than being sandboxed, measured or evaluated. All decisions are made through vote but a large portion of common sense means that often the most suitable person for a decision makes it. Our philosophy is based on that of Ricardo Semler and how he runs his company Semco in Brasil. Working like this is great. I can't imagine going back to working in an old-style fashioned company with managers, politics and secrets.

There's some information about Ricardo Semler on Wikipedia and they have a page about the "bible" which was his first book Maverick! which was given to be on day one as the "manual" for working at Fry-IT.
